Canton Preservation Society Annual Meeting
OHIO'S FIRST SUPER HIGHWAY - 1825 TO 1913 - THE 300-MILE, HAND-DUG DITCH CALLED
"THE OHIO-ERIE CANAL"
Canton is the little known chapter in that canal history . . . . when
in 1835 little Canton, Ohio (pop. 1,200) started to dig a feeder-canal
down the middle of Walnut Avenue (renamed Canal Street for a period of
time) that would ultimately give Canton a commercial waterway
connection all the way to the Lake Erie port city of Cleveland via the
recently completed OHIO-ERIE CANAL that had bypassed Canton in favor of
her rival town of Massillon. This remarkable construction of the
300-mile, hand-dug ditch stretched all the way from the Ohio River to
Lake Erie, an early engineering feat that almost overnight lifted Stark
County out the wilderness and into civilization.
